Freedom Train by dogeatdog5 Freedom Train by dogeatdog5
Entering this for the Global Subway contest. It didn't say no manipulations so I thought I would submitt this one. This is taken on the Chicago L train and the sky is from the last flight I took. I thought the combination of them was perfect for the contest since it basically is about the infringment upon our freedoms and this photo to me represents freedom.

I love the picture. The model's femininity is a perfect partner to the cloudy sky.

Freedom, it is exaclty that I feel when I see your work! In my opinion, it's important someone remember us we're all free! But there is not places where we are absolutely quiet otherwise in the sky! toughing photo with very nice model! I love it! :+favlove:

looks like a kick-ass ski-lift/gondola/tram ride. I'd jump in for a spin, given the chance, though i could only dare to look as cosmo as she is. Cool piece.

Love the sky outside! :D

I love the sky. To me the Sky in the background kind of represents the model's thoughts...the freedom and whatnot.
Very cool manip. At first I didnt understand, I thought it was a photograph
LeRoue Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2005
Wow this is gorgeous! I wish this is how the el really was, nothing but clouds outside and beautiful serene people inside. Excellent work!!

Just to begin with, I love the aura radiating from this piece.
Is is so surreal, yet grounded at the same time by the stark interior of the train.
The different warm colours and textures of the hat, the shirt, and the sky and it's rays contrasting with the green tint of the seating is interesting, however, I am not sure that it is effective. I feel that the hands and the train's dark seating in the bottom half of the image is disrupting and cutting attention away from the warmness of the top half.
I would really love to see a version where there is a closer crop on the face and and left window.
Lastly, I am not sure if this picture radiates freedom for me... as the subject appears almost sad with the pulled down hat hiding the downcast eyes, the posture of the hands as though clasped there by an exterior force, which leads me on to think that perhaps this person is being held captive away from the freedom that is only merely inches away.
But that's only me! We love the picture as is also.

regarding the crop, after another look... perhaps not the left window... i am just not sure, the shadow is so brilliant that it cannot be missed out.
ephigy Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2005
Fucking brilliant.

If I were a judge in that contest, you'd get some serious props from me. Since I'm not a judge, you get serious props anyway.

What most impresses me is the lighting. In manipulations like this, it's hard to find a background(in this case the sky) that has the right Quality of light... humans are too good at detecting discrepencies. For example, the bluish light on the fringes of the right side of her hat, and her hand. Some seriously phenomenal luck, or mighty photoshop talent. You did a fantastic job of matching the sky to the windows; but there's one spot that's fucked up. Look in the lower right corner of the big window.

Then there's the color. The shirt is an absolutely perfect contrast to the sky. I haven't seen colors support eachother that well in a while. The combined effect of the warm (late afternoon?) sunlight on her face and creamy, half-and-half blue of the clouds is stunning. It's as if you managed to capture the entire gamut: I see greens, yellows, reds, blues and virtually everything in between. I'm flabbergasted.

And the focus! The focus! It's sublime.

I love the grain. Did you shoot this digitally or on film? 400? 800? Could you send me a bigger image?

Wonderful, wonderful work.
dogeatdog5 Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2005
I shot the sky digitaly but the train was shot with 400 speed flim. Thanks for all the comments. I would have to locate this photo it's on my old desktop which is pack right now.

nice work on the manip.

lots to think about on this one.
Is this a man or woman?
What is he/she so meloncholy about>
The pose and posture almost communicate proud but defeated.

The sky is a great touch.
Almost like going home.
